Scallop Shell Plaques

The Maritime Mile trail in Minehead is part of a wider project to promote Minehead’s rich history as a seaside town at the edge of Exmoor.

sea wall and beachFamously Butlins holiday park is located east of the town along the seafront, visitors to Butlins often wouldn’t adventure far beyond the gates of the park! Minehead has a beautiful Victorian town centre and quaint cottages along the seashore. Minehead and West Somerset county council wish to promote the many beatiful aspects of this seaside town and encourage visitors to walk the entire mile of seafront. Funds allocated by the EU for rural areas has been awarded to make these improvement happen for Minehead.

Information signs and artinstalations have been placed a key points of the seafront highlighting points of interest. The Scallop shell trail ‘Maritime Mile’ will lead visitors along the seafront from Butlins along the promenade to the harbour.

Approximately five-hundred scallop shalls have been handmade and installed by Thrussells June 2018.  Each plaque is 35cm diameter and made from 3mm thick marine grade stainless steel.
