Minehead Maritime Mile Trail

Scallop Shell Plaques

The Maritime Mile trail in Minehead is part of a wider project to promote Minehead’s rich history as a seaside town at the edge of Exmoor.

Famously Butlins holiday park is located east of the town along the seafront, visitors to Butlins often wouldn’t adventure far beyond the gates of the park! Minehead has a beautiful Victorian town centre and quaint cottages along the seashore. Minehead and West Somerset county council wish to promote the many beautiful aspects of this seaside town and encourage visitors to walk the entire mile of seafront. Funds allocated by the EU for Rural Areas has been awarded to make these improvement happen for Minehead Seafront.

Information signs and art installations have been placed at key points on the seafront highlighting points of interest. ‘Maritime Mile’ takes the form of the Scallop shell Trail, this trail leads visitors along the seafront from Butlins along the promenade to the harbour – approximately one mile walk along the shoreline.

Five-hundred scallop shalls have been handmade and installed by Thrussells in June of 2018. Each scallop plaque is 35cm diameter and made from 3mm thick marine grade stainless steel.
